How Storage Pricing Works

Just as in any other area, we know that you will always search for the best deal out there when it comes to deciding where to store your things. Storage pricing can be very reasonable but it always depends on a number of criteria. Principal amongst them however is the actually size of the space that you choose to rent out – if you need to store a lot of items than you’ll needed a larger space, which will cost you more. However, there are also other criteria that may bump up the price; for example, do you need a climate controlled room or extra padlocks on the door?

At Sage Moving & Storage, we know from years of storing our client’s belongings that sometimes special arrangements need to be made. However, we also know the importance our clients place in getting the type of services that they expect, even if the cost is increased as a result. So, we have compiled a list of factors that can affect the end cost of renting storage for your possessions so you know what to expect and understand better how the billing system works.

Insurance Policies

One of the most important things to have is storage insurance, although not all storage facility companies will provide coverage to you. In some cases, you will have to take out a policy with the company to ensure that your belongings are protected. Sometimes coverage is not offered but they will ask you for an insurance certificate to prove that you already have coverage. If you don’t have coverage yourself then they may not allow you to avail of their services. It is worth checking out the status of your own home insurance, as it may include storage. If it doesn’t then a separate policy may need to be taken out.

Controlling the Environment

Depending on what items you are storing, you may decide that a climate controlled storage space is necessary. You might have paintings that could blister in hot temperatures, or wooden furniture that could warp. You might also have linen or materials that need the air to be dry. In such cases, you can avail of climate controlled facilities, which will cost you some more.

Transport, Manpower

While it is common to have to transport your own belongings to some self-storage facilities, it is also possible to hire transport and manpower to pack, load, transport and unload your possessions, from your home to the storage space. Moving companies will offer this service for certain and sometimes for free, however that is usually as a promotion and is limited to a period of time. If you go above the period, you must pay extra, while the same stands for manpower, with any increase in the number of the moving team pushing the cost up.

Special Locks

You might think that the normal padlock on the door into you storage space would be enough to keep your belongings safe. In fact, it probably would be but there are specially designed padlocks available which can provide extra protection. Sometimes it is obligatory that you buy these locks at the facility and place them on the door. They do work however, and often are worth the extra expense.

There are other, smaller factors that can affect the total price of storage. For example, usually a deposit needs to be paid, though this is returned at the end of the term of storage. However, for the most part, it is the extras that increase the overall price, so if you pack and transport your possessions yourself, that can help to save some on the cost.
