Preparing appliances for your Rockville Movers

There are a multitude of appliances to worry about when you are moving home, and they come in a variety of sizes and weights. The large items can be very awkward to move, while the smaller items with their knobs and wires and attachments can be a nightmare to pack for your Rockville movers to transport safely to their destination. So, take a look at our quick guide to preparing your appliances – large and small – for the move to their new home.

Large Appliances

The large appliances will take up the most space and add the most weight onto your Rockville moving company's truck. However, it’s also true that they will be amongst the most expensive items on the truck so it’s important to wrap or pack them properly. All of the following items should have any electrical plugs and cords attached by tape to them and each will need to have their door secured thoroughly. It is also an idea to use unbreakable soft items to fill in the wholes in the appliance; for example, put a pillow in the drum of your washer-dryer.

Refrigerator: Because of the nature of the appliance, it’s important to have the refrigerator completely empty and defrosted at least 24 hours before the actual move. It is equally important to clean the appliance thoroughly, drain the ice-maker (if it has one) and cut off the waterline to it. Remove the shelves and pack them separately.

Dishwasher: Obviously make sure that this is emptied before your Rockville movers arrive, and that the loose sections (utensil rack etc) are secured. You can plug the gaps with soft items, like pillows, blankets or even stuffed animals. Secure the trays by packing them elsewhere and remove the water arm in the roof of the machine.

Washer-Dryer: Be sure to remove and then label clearly each of the hoses. The drum may be a problem and it would be worth consulting the manufacturer’s website or product manual to ensure that it is secured properly. Remember, a pillow could be perfect for filling this space in.

Stove: This may be the greasiest appliance to move but you’ll have to clean it up before the big move. Scrub it thoroughly and remove the trays and pack them elsewhere. If it’s a gas stove, ensure that the lines are disconnected carefully and taped to the stove. Remove the elements if possible, otherwise stuff paper, sheets, blankets or something soft behind them to protect them.

Small Appliances

You could have dozens of these hanging around your kitchen but each one needs to be packed properly and fully catalogued on the inventory. The attachments must also be noted, which only adds to the time necessary – however, it’s all worth it when you’re looking for a missing blade or container! If you can, use the original box they came in but if you’ve no longer got that simply choose a few medium-sized boxes, and get plenty of wrapping paper or bubble-wrap.

Practically all of these appliances are small enough to wrap easily, however you must ensure that the wrapping is secured with tape. Then place them carefully into the box with sufficient packing between the items (crumpled paper is perfect). Be sure that any detachable parts are removed first, and wrapped separately. Once they have been placed in the box, label the box clearly and note what precisely the contents are.

Moving appliances is a tricky part to the whole job but it needn’t be as difficult as it seems. Remember to pre-plan your packing by noting everything that needs to be packed first then set about choosing your boxes and what should go into each. Time and patience are you best friends.
